Vulcano (Hierà), is the closet of the Aeolian Islands to the Sicilian mainland, located 12 miglia from the Cape of Milazzo and separated from Lipari by a small channel just about a mile wide.
The island is characterized by the overwhelming presence of the Volcano, which is greatly admired by those that visit The boiling mud baths caused by secondary volcanism are used primarily to cure rheumatism and skin problems. The characteristic odour of sulphur, which is used for respiratory therapy, becomes intense for those that profit from the unique opportunity to trek up to the Crater of the Fossa, an unforgettable excursion where one can see chimney smokers emitting sulphuric vapours.
The beach of the Fumarole, where you can go swimming in naturally heated water and the Black Sand beach at the Bay of Ponente, are highly recommended for those that visit the island of Vulcano.
How to reach the Island
Ferry boats – useful for those with cars or camper vans – and hydrofoils connect Vulcano to the other islands and to the Sicilian mainland. Hydrofoils cross between Vulcano and Milazzo in less than an hour.
